About Me:

Having, I hope, learned important lessons from experiencing both the sadness of divorce and a joyful marriage that ended with the passing of a beloved wife, I now look forward to joining a special woman in a thoroughly happy, fulfilling, and loving last companionship.
Beginning and ending at BYU, I taught English, directed university operas and plays, and created programs combining music and literature that were performed in the US and foreign countries. Still creating, in fact.

I love the life of the mind; but I'm also a fun-seeking old movie buff and reader of mysteries and historical fiction who is forever searching for the best enchilada or apple turnover—and, especially, planning the next exciting travel adventure. Adding many more to the 40 countries already visited, I'd love to welcome a congenial companion for the next excursion, Israel, perhaps, or a co-pilot for a bucket-list driving tour of the micro-states of Europe. Or whatever destination is at the top of her travel list.
In retirement, my mind is active and curious: Covid-19 pastimes include a self-taught course in classical music and an intro to baking (pretty good pecan pie, delicious chocolate cake, several mysteriously bad batches of brownies). I'm also physically active; having scaled many Wasatch Range peaks, a friend and I recently hiked the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, 5-7 miles at a time. Still, my favorite exercise is a nighttime stroll through any interesting city, US or foreign, a walk best enjoyed while holding hands. I'm a regular at the movies, theater, ballet, symphony, and opera. What I sorely miss is being able to turn to someone special sitting next to me and asking, "What did you think?" I tend to listen to classic rock in the car and the classics at home.

LDS singles I'd Like to Meet:

In a relationship, l value mutual support, kindness, and affection. My definition of love borrows from Scott Peck’s thoroughly Gospel-consistent perspective: deep, passionate feelings are glorious, of course; but at its heart, real love is a commitment to nourish the spiritual welfare of the beloved. It would be wonderful to find a similarly inclined woman to travel together through the next stage of our lives, one who shares my September state of mind, captured so well in Kurt Weill's "September Song":
Oh, it's a long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September.
...
And the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November/
And these few precious days, I'll spend with you
These precious days, I'll spend with you.
(Willie Nelson sings a great version on YouTube.)

Church of Jesus Christ:

I served a wonderful CES mission in the Bay Area with my late wife, where teaching 114 classes on the New Testament at Institutes at five universities deepened my testimony of the Savior’s grace. More recent was a service mission at Church Headquarters with the Perpetual Education Fund. A couples mission with a new companion is an attractive possibility.
